Jason Andrews and Grace McCalman received fierce competition before prevailing over Nicola Ramdyan and Benedict Sukra in the mixed doubles category of the GBTI Open Tennis Tournament when play continued on Tuesday at the courts of the GBTI Sports Club.
The two senior players scored an easy 6 – 1 win in the first set but found themselves upstaged by youngsters in the second set as Ramdhyan and Sukra kept things tight.
They took the second set on the tie-break 7-6 and the third 6 – 2.
Albert Madramootoo and Steve David-Longe eliminated Gavin Barckoy and Henk Wilkinson from the men’s doubles category 6 – 4, 6 – 4 while in the first of the two men’s singles matches of the night Kijana Lewis recorded his second win of the tournament defeating Jonathan Fungundes, 6 – 4, 4 – 6, 6 – 4, while the men’s second seed Jeremy Miller pocketed his first singles win by defeating Benjattan Osbourne 6 – 1, 6 – 1.
Shawna Gentle gave Thi Fernandes a walkover in the women’s singles encounter.
Meanwhile, on Sunday in the three men’s singles matches Gavin Lewis defeated Carlos Adams 6 – 2, 6 – 4, and Gavin Barckoy prevailed over Bishan Dalip 6 – 2, 6 – 4.
In the men’s doubles Miller and Andrews produced their first win of the tournament defeating Maxie Fox and Keith Eversely 6 – 1, 6 – 3.
In the mixed doubles Daly Ramdyhan teamed up with Lowden to prevail over the team of Thi and David Fernandes 6 – 2, 6 – 1. Khalif Gobin and Benedict Sukra won their men’s doubles match against Gairy Myers and Kijana Lewis after the latter pair retired due to personal commitments.
