Khan spins Guyana to eight-wicket victory

DENNERY, St. Lucia, CMC – Guyana rode the crest of a penetrative spell of left-arm spin from Amir Khan to post an eight-wicket victory over Leeward Islands in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge yesterday.

The Guyana captain finished with seven wickets for 45 runs from 20 overs, as Leewards, trailing by 68 runs on first innings, were dismissed for 131 in their second innings.

Chasing a modest 64 for victory, Guyana reached their target in the first hour after lunch on the third and final day of the first round match at the Dennery Playing Field.

The result was the only victory of the first round, shooting Guyana to the top of the standings with 12 points, and leaving Leewards rock-bottom with no points.

Guyana’s chase started miserably, when opener Harrinarine Chattergoon was caught off Leewards captain and new ball bowler Adelvin Phillips for a duck.

Herell Greene joined Brian Sattaur, and carried Guyana to 25 for one at lunch, but Hayden Walsh Jr had him caught shortly after the interval for 12.

The Guyanese did not panic however, and Dominique Ricky joined Sattaur to carry them the rest of the way.

Earlier, Khan weaved a web around the Leewards’s batting, after they continued from their overnight total of 73 for five.

He had early success, when he had Shaquille Martin stumped for a duck, but a stand of 39 between Walsh and Phillips carried Leewards to 112 for six.

But Khan snared them both to trigger the final collapse that saw Leewards lose their last four wickets for 19 runs.

Guyana face defending champions Jamaica at the Gros-Islet Playing Field in the second round, when the Leewards meet Barbados at the Beauejour Cricket Ground.
