Disappointment was evident on the faces of several youngsters who eagerly turned up yesterday at the tennis courts of the Pegasus Hotel to begin their first day of the P & P Insurance Lawn Tennis Summer Camp, but had to contend with its postponement after rain flooded the courts.
The first session of the camp, the beginner’s session, was expected to begin at 9.00AM, but when Stabroek Sport visited the courts yesterday it was evident that no racquet swinging could take place for the rest of the day.
A few of the youngsters who still remained related their disappointment over the premature end to their first day at the tennis camp owing to the inclement weather.
The event coordinator, Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan stated that though she was sorry for the disappointment, this was just a minor setback.
“It is not affecting the camp because today is the first day and hopefully it’ll just be setback,” Ramdyhan stated
“But there are the participants, especially those who were coming for the first time, they were disappointed because they were hoping to see what the whole tennis programme was about.”
Ramdyhan disclosed that efforts are currently underway to acquire an indoor facility to eliminate the influence of the weather. Nevertheless, Ramdyhan stated that she as well as the other coaches and the participants are eagerly awaiting the commencement of the camp.
“We are anxiously waiting to get the programme started, we are expecting a large number of kids and we’re really looking forward to getting started with them,” Ramdhyan stated.
With favourable weather the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association is hoping to get things back on track from today.
The camp, which is open to individuals between 6 – 18 years old, has been implemented for the past six years by the GLTA in collaboration with P & P Insurance Brokers as a part of the association’s ongoing efforts to arouse the younger generation’s interest in the sport.
