Amin makes Goodwill Games `B’ qualifying standard

Shaqueel Amin became the latest swimmer to qualify for the Goodwill Games as the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) trials continued yesterday at the Castellani Pool, Homestretch Avenue.

Amin achieved the Goodwill Games `B’ qualifying time yesterday in the 11-12 year old 50m freestyle event.

Amin had chalked up two failed attempts on Friday in the 100m freestyle and the 50m breaststroke events which he won.

Yesterday, Britany van Lange, Ronaldo Rodrigues and Serrano Gonsalves, already with Goodwill Games `B’ qualifying times under their belts, added to their list of qualified events for the games.

With a Goodwill Games `B’ time of 30.57 seconds in the 50m freestyle and 34.73 seconds in the butterfly, van Lange, swimming in the 13 – 14 age group category, qualified for the two events.

Rodrigues also qualified for two more events, the 100m breaststroke with a `B’ time of one minute and 16.81 seconds and the 50m butterfly in 29.84 seconds.

Gonsalves placed second behind Rodrigues clocking 30.43 seconds in the 50m butterfly which also qualified him for the event.

On Friday, van Lange had qualified for the 100m freestyle with a Goodwill Games `B’ time of one minute and 6.20 seconds while Soroya Simmons qualified for the 100m backstroke event with a Goodwill Games `B’ qualifying time of one minute and 19.48 seconds.

Rodriques qualified for the 50m breaststroke with a time of 34.57 seconds while Gonsalves qualified for the 100m backstroke with a time of one minute and 20.10 seconds.

Other swimmers who have so far qualified for the games include Steffi DeNobrega and Kevon DeMoura in the 15 – 17 category. De Nobrega qualified for the 50m breaststroke with a Goodwill Games `B’ qualifying time of 42 seconds and DeMoura qualified with a time of 33.63 seconds in the boys’ 50 metre breaststroke event.
