Barbados take points in tame draw

GROS ISLET, St Lucia, CMC – Barbados grabbed first innings points in a tame draw against Jamaica as their TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge finished in disappointing fashion yesterday.

Replying to Jamaica’s 259, Barbados were forced to battle before being bowled out for 271 at the Gros Islet Playing Field, securing a lead of 12 runs in the morning session on the final day of the final round of matches.

Resuming at their overnight 212 for six still 47 runs adrift of their target, Barbados got handsome knocks from Justin Greaves who scored 51 and Mario Rampersad who hit 44.

Unbeaten on 40 at the start, Greaves completed his half-century before falling after stroking six fours in a knock that lasted 179 minutes and 169 balls .

Rampersad, who started the day on 29, hit four fours in an innings that required 213 minutes and 188 balls.

They extended their seventh wicket partnership to 83 before Greaves fell to a catch at mid-on off leg-spinner Donovan Nelson who claimed five for 101.

Rampersad then added a valuable 43 for the eighth wicket with Jomel Warrican who stroked a breezy 22 with two fours and a six.

The partnership took Barbados past their target before the innings collapsed suddenly with three wickets falling for no run.

Opting for batting practice, Jamaica reached 132 for four before the game was predictably called off.

Ramon Senior struck his second half-century of the match, carving out an unbeaten 51 from 113 balls with three fours and two sixes while opener Peate Salmon hit an enterprising 40 from 69 balls with four fours and two sixes.

Left-arm seamer Ravindra Persaud was again impressive, snatching two for 14 to leave Jamaica on 26 for two at one stage.

However, Senior and Salmon posted 70 for the third wicket to keep the innings together.

Both Barbados and Jamaica finished on 27 points but the Barbadians took third place by virtue of taking first innings points against Jamaica.
