T&T crush Guyana to finish second in Challenge

DENNERY, St Lucia, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago crushed Guyana by 133 runs to finish second in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge here yesterday.

After declaring at their overnight 219 for three and setting Guyana a near impossible 339 for victory, T&T met with little resistance as they sent their opponents tumbling for 205 all out at the Dennery Playing Field on the final day of their final round encounter.

Guyana were undermined by the leg-spin of West Indies Youth player Yannic Cariah who claimed six for 71 to lead T&T’s bowling attack.

Brian Sattaur top-scored with 46 while captain Dexter Solomon got 45 and Andre Stoll, 27, but they failed to prevent Guyana’s loss which saw them finish fifth in the six-team standings.

Guyana were given a positive start, however, from Sattaur and Quincy Richardson as the pair added a fluent 67 for the first wicket.

Medium pacer Derone Davis, who took two for 71, got the breakthrough when he bowled Richardson for 21 and Sattaur followed two runs later, caught and bowled by Cariah after slamming seven fours and two sixes.

Wicket then fell steadily with the usually prolific Harrinarine Chattergoon (11) and Ricardo Adams (16) falling cheaply, and when Dominique Rickhi was lbw to Akeal Hosein for 24 at 125 for five, Guyana were spiraling towards defeat.

Solomon, who counted three fours in his 35, and Stoll who hit four, then held up T&T’s advance with a stubborn 52-run sixth wicket stand.

The partnership ended when Cariah bowled Stoll at 177 and the end came swiftly as the leg-spinner clinically cleaned up the lower order.
