Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) continued its corporate support to the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) with a presentation of a cheque yesterday for the  B and Lower Class race this Sunday at the KMTC Bush Lot, Corentyne turf.

Brand manager of DDL’s El Dorado Rum Jeranzee Marques, right, presents the winner’s trophy and sponsorship cheque to retired Chief Justice Cecil Kennard yesterday.

The handing over was done in the boardroom of the DDL head office at High Street, Kingston and brand manager Jeranzee Marques said  that the company, which was with the KMTC over the past 38 years, was pleased to be associated with the horse race meet.

The cheque and winner’s trophy was received by Justice Cecil Kennard.

“DDL has supported the development of sports in Guyana and is very pleased to be associated with the KMTC once again. We have been supporting events organized by the turf club for a number of years and we are happy to do so once again.”

Kennard, who is also the honorary president of KMTC and head of the Police Complaints Authority, lauded the sponsors for their timely contribution on behalf of the executives of the horse racing club.

“On behalf of the executives of the KMTC, I would like to extend my gratitude to the management of DDL for coming on board with us. Most sporting activities cannot go ahead without sponsorship and I am extremely happy to know that DDL has agreed to continue their partnership with us.”

All the races are being run under the rules and auspices of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA), and horse owners must register their horses with the GHRA in order to be classified.

Entries for the upcoming event closed off last Saturday, with owners being asked to pay $3,000 per entry of each horse per race, and failure to do so  would result in the horse’s name not being listed on the official programme.

Some of the jockeys who will be on show are Paul Delph, who has been champion jockey for the past two race meets, Daniel Ross, Prem Chandra and Yhap Drepaul. Kennard also hoped that good weather will prevail until Sunday.

Some of the horses that will be on show that day covering a distance of seven furlongs are Laura Lee in Flight, Sweet Revenge, Annie’s Playmate, Irish Gel, Silver Source, Tropical Passion, Maracas Man, Star Tracer, On the Rocks with Salt and The Gap.
