Chanderpaul has first ball failure but Collymore shines

LONDON, England,  CMC – West Indies batsman Shiv Chanderpaul suffered a rare failure for Lancashire yesterday when he fell for a first ball “duck” against Kent on the opening day of their Division One fixture.

The veteran left-hander, who has been in great form for the north England county in his brief stint there, edged seamer Darren Stevens (3-33) to out-of-favour England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones at 56 for three after the visitors won the toss at St Lawrence Ground.

Chanderpaul’s demise came in a spell where Stevens snared three wickets in 13 balls as Kent claimed four wickets for a single run in the space of 31 balls.

Steven Croft then stroked 65 and Sajid Mahmood cracked a rearguard 60 to help propel Lancs to 266, recovering from a worrisome 157 for six.

At the close, Kent were 53 for two.

Chanderpaul has had a prolific stint with Lancashire so far, having already scored 321 runs from three matches with a highest score of 118.

In Division Two, former Windies seamer Corey Collymore had better fortunes for Sussex, claiming two for 37 to limit Derbyshire to 242 all out.

The right-armer knocked over openers Wayne Madsen (2) and Leeward Islands batsman Chesney Hughes (22), both lbw, to leave Derbyshire 42 for two after they won the toss and batted away at Horsham.

Wes Durston struck 69 and Steve Adshead added 49 to consolidate the innings and push the visitors to their eventual score.

At the close, Chris Nash (81 not out) and Ed Joyce (69 not out) had steered the hosts to 170 without loss.
