Imran says any guilty players must face tough punishment

KARACHI, (Reuters) – Pakistan’s former cricket  captain Imran Khan called for exemplary punishment to be given  to any player found guilty of spot fixing during the tour of  England.

“I think there is a need to send out a message to  youngsters…that crime does not pay,” Imran told Geo News  channel yesterday.

“I myself have come to know about these allegations against  our players from the media. I hope they are not true but if any  player is found guilty he should be made an example for future  generations of Pakistani cricketers.”
British police said on Saturday they had arrested a  35-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud  bookmakers.

The arrest followed a newspaper report that Pakistan players  had been bribed to fix incidents in the fourth test against  England, which ended in defeat for the Pakistanis at Lord’s yesterday.

Imran led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 World Cup and is now a respected politician.
