Miss Republic wins C class event, $1.2M and Banks DIH Guyana Cup Classic Trophy

Colin Elcock’s top mare Miss Republic took the feature C class event and the $1.2 million cash prize along with the Banks DIH Guyana Cup Classic Trophy at the Rising Sun Turf, Arima Park, West Coast Berbice on Sunday.

Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and Stables collaborated with The Rising Sun Turf Club to successfully hold the fourth annual Guyana Cup Horse Race meet, which was attended by a full house. More than 100 horses competed for top honours and more than $10 million in trophies and other prizes.

In the feature event, ran over a distance 1600m, Miss Republic and Pinch De Cash battled from the time they were out of the gate and were inseparable until the homestretch. Miss Republic’s jockey Daniel Flores pushed the beast and Pinch De Cash, ridden by Andron Findlay of Jamaica, could not keep up. In the end Pinch de Cash was beaten by six lengths and  Laura Lee in Flight and Night Crescendo were the other horses in the money.

The Zenyatta Memorial Classic three-year-old co-feature for Guyana and West Indies bred horses ended in controversy. It was a grudge match between Sabrina’s Princess of the Jagdeo Stable, Peaceful and Celebration Time of the Elcock Stable and Jen’s Pride of the Rumours Stable.

In the end Sabrina’s Princess with Rupert Ramnauth in control crossed the finish line ahead of Stormy Lass of the Habibulla Stables. Sabrina’s Princess took the top prize of $1 million and the trophy.

Kris Jagdeo’s colt Better than Gold romped to victory in the Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and Cummings Electrical sponsored event for two-year-old animals bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies. The horse, mounted by Ramnauth, led from gate to pole and was never challenged.

It took away the $800,000 first prize and trophy while Irish Girl and Sabrina’s Joy finished second and third for the 1100m event. Wicked Intentions, mounted by Mahendra Sukhoo, was clinical in its dominance of the two-year-olds from gate to pole. The top spot went for $400,000 while Water Wave, Apostle and Northern Junior were the other front runners. Night Crescendo took top honours in the E class event after a blistering home stretch run to take the $600,000 ahead of The Gap and Fresh Prospect respectively. There was also some drama in the Digicel-sponsored G class event. South Sea, ridden by Kevin Paul, was declared the winner and copped the $400,000 winner’s money and Digicel trophy after The Gap was disqualified for running out of its class. Stylish Line, Pixie Fire and Dubai Dutchess were the other horses in bargain positions.

Amy Jane of the Crawford Stable won its second race of the day to take the $300,000 top prize, compliments of Imperial Manufacturers. Casino Royal, Finishing Touch and Baby Boy finished down the order.

Diplomat won running in the I class contest while Dream Girl, Savion and Lyana came in afterwards.

The I-3 and Lower race for winners of one race and lower saw Mona Lisa winning. Mona Lisa came from behind to win $150,000 and a trophy, compliments of Yellow Mining. Sun Razor, Savion and Royal Time were second, third and fourth respectively.

Meanwhile, Crawford Stable was adjudged champion stable with its three wins. The champion jockey honours went to Daniel Flores while Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford was adjudged champion trainer.

They were all presented with trophies, compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market.
