Hughes hits half-century but Derby lose

LONDON, England, CMC – Teenaged Leeward Islands batsman Chesney Hughes continued his impressive form with a half-century for Derbyshire in a losing cause for Middlesex yesterday.

Playing in the Clydesdale Bank 40 limited overs championship, the left-handed opener hammered 64 from 59 balls but Derbyshire slipped to a comprehensive seven-wicket loss at Lord’s, their eighth defeat in 12 games.

Sent in to bat, Derbyshire managed just 195 for nine off their allotted 40 overs, with Hughes stroking six fours and one six. Derbyshire crashed to 32 for three in the seventh over before Hughes added a crucial 82 for the fourth wicket with Wayne Madsen (39) to revive the innings.
Graham Wagg hammered an unbeaten 48 from 53 balls down the order.

Scott Newman then struck 90 in a 127-run second wicket stand with Owais Shah (58 not out), to lay the foundation for Middlesex’s win.

At Chester-le-Street, former Jamaica all-rounder Gareth Breese snared two for 13 with his off-spin but his Durham side went down to Kent by 31 runs in a low-scoring encounter.
Kent were sent tumbling for 144 all out off 39.1 overs but Durham could only muster 113 all out in reply, with Breese scoring a mere 13.
