Guyana’s Commonwealth Games selectee Clevlon Rock gave a glimpse of what he will unleash at next month’s games in India when he stopped Stephan Gouveia in a lightweight contest on the second night of the Michael Parris National Open Boxing Championships Saturday night at the National Gymnasium.
It was an altogether too brief a glimpse of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) boxer for the roaring crowd as Rock proved too much for Gouveia with the referee stopping the contest a mere two rounds in.
Rock’s fellow gym mate, Bert Braithwaite, complemented Rock’s performance taking charge of his fight against Port Kaituma Boxing Gym’s Mark George.
It was once again up to the referee to show leniency and rescue George with Braithwaite securing the win minutes into the second round of the bout.
Over in the Open elite featherweight division, the bout between Port Kaituma’s Benjamin Henry and GDF’s Clarence Gibson was also cut short by the referee in the second round in order to save Gibson further punishment.
Also registering a win in the elite featherweight division, was Forgotten Youth Foundation’s (FYF) Delon Allicock, who gained a walkover from GDF’s Silton David.
In the varying weight categories of the junior division, Essequibo Boxing Gym’s Odeny Moore and Shaka Moore and Central New Amsterdam Gym’s Travis Fraser, along with Forgotten Youth Foundation’s Ezekiel Accra and Seon Griffith all recorded victories in their bouts Saturday night.
In the 118 – 125 lbs category, Fraser forced the referee to step in and save Essequibo’s Boxing Gym’s Kevin Roberts from further punishment.
Griffith, in the 85 – 89 lbs category, defeated FYF’s Dewani Lampkin, while Accra, in the 74 – 78 lbs category, overwhelmed Central New Amsterdam’s Michael April.
Shaka Moore overcame Harpy Eagles Gym’s Christopher Mansfield, in the 65 – 69 lbs category while Odeny Moore, in the night’s curtain raiser, defeated his gym mate Christopher Timmerman in the 60 – 64 lbs category.
