Ayube Ali won the Nearest to the Pin prize on the number eight hole. Director of Demerara Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Company, Clifford Reis, presented the prizes to the outstanding players. Reis, a devoted golfer, stated that the company, one of the oldest insurance companies in the Caribbean, has been a major contributor to sports in Guyana and in the region and this trend will continue in the future.

According to Reis, who is also chairman of Banks DIH Limited and Citizens Bank, two major sponsors of golf locally, more emphasis will be placed on attracting youths to the sport in the not too distant future.

He disclosed that plans are afoot among a few companies that he is closely associated with to organize programmes for school age children.

“The game has got to expand; we need to encourage the younger ones to get on board so that we could have close to 170 players playing every week instead of the 45 that are active,” Reis remarked.

Lusignan Golf Club treasurer, Brian Hackett, thanked Demerara Mutual for sponsoring the tournament once again and encouraged the company to continue to sponsor tournaments in the future.
