Sham Khan wins junior chess qualifiers

– tie break system fails to separate Taffin Khan and Omar Shariff in senior category
Despite suffering two losses Sham Khan was able to capture the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Topco Juices junior qualifying championships which ended on Sunday at the Keishar’s Sports Club.

Prize winners at the DDL Topco Juice senior and junior tournaments which ended Sunday at the Keishars Sports Club.

Khan ended the eight round Swiss system tournament with six points after losing to Raan Motilall and Rashad Hussain.
Motilall took the second position while Suhai Feng was third.

The three players along with Rashad Hussain, Ron Motilall, Carlos Petterson and Ryan Mc Kay will joining national junior champion Cecil Cox to contest the Closed National Junior Chess Championships.

The final points standings; Sham Khan, 6 points, Raan Motilall, Suhai Feng, Rashad Hussain and Ron Motilall,  five-and-a-half points, Carlos Petterson and Ryan McKay, five points, Saeed Ali, Faraad Baksh and Khalid Gajraj, four-and-a-half points, Crystal Khan, Shane Yussuf and Daryll Calistro, four points, Kana Khan, Aslam Hussain, Sheriffa Ali and Videsh Shameer, three points, Adam Ramnarayan two-and-a-half points, Rajendra Jetoo, two points and Jason Barnwell and Ganesh Persaud,one point each.

In the senior category, Omar Shariff and Taffin Khan ended on eight points each to share the top position.
According to tournament director Irshad Mohammed, the tie-breaker was even for both players.

Khan was third.
The final points standing; Omar Shariff and Taffin Khan eight points apiece (Berger Tie-breaker 29.00 each), David Khan, seven points, Shiv Nandalall, six points, Errol Tiwari, five points, Glenford Corlette, three points and  Learie Webster and Alex Joseph, two points each.

The tournament was sponsored exclusively by DDL under the Topco Juices brand. DDL Representative Miss Alexis Glasgow was on hand to present the trophies and prizes.
