Jordon beaten, boxing medal hopes dashed

Jordon, after making a compelling case of his ability to claim a medal with his first round stoppage of Neo Thamahane, was whipped yesterday 8-0 by Njangiry in the 52kg flyweight division.

Jordon, after securing Guyana’s only win in the ring at the XIX Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, now joins his two other teammates Clevon Rock and Devon Boatswain, who were knocked out of competition in the first round.

Many were hoping that Jordon would have replicated his 2010 bronze medal performance at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in July, but manager of the boxing team Steve Ninvalle had earlier said that fights would have been harder as the boxer progressed.

Njangiry will now meet Oteng Oteng of Botswana in the semi-final.

Over at the Siri Fort Sports Complex Nicolette Fernandes and Ashley Khalil suffered straight sets defeat to Tania Bailey and Sarah Kippax of England in the women’s double squash preliminary round.

The Guyanese pair went down 0-2 to the British.

The first game was evenly matched at the beginning but Kippax and Bailey left their opponents in their wake when the game was 2-2.

The second game between the pairs was even more one-sided with the English pair schooling the Guyanese 11-2.

Cycling
Meanwhile, Guyanese cyclists Alonzo Greaves, Geron Williams and Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams will be competing today at the Free Church Sausad Marg complex in the men’s cycling road race over a distance of 168km.
