Taylor shines again as Windies win third straight

The 19-year-old opener stroked an accomplished unbeaten 68 as the Windies cruised to 166 for one off 28.4 overs, in response to Sri Lanka’s inadequate 165 all out off 48.3 overs at North-West University Ground.

Taylor’s opening partner Juliana Nero stroked 52 while captain Merissa Aguilleira finished saw her side home with 37 not-out, as the Windies girls remained unbeaten in the One-Day International segment of the six-team tournament.

Earlier, off-spinner Anisa Mohammed snatched a career-best four for 26 to help send the Sri Lankans tumbling after they won the toss and chose to bat first.

At one stage, Sri Lanka were in danger of being dismissed for less than 100 at 99 for eight but Dilani Surangika (29 not out) and Sripali Weerakkody (27) combined in a face-saving 65-run, ninth wicket stand to rescue their side.

The result was never in doubt, however, when Taylor and Nero raised 91 from 73 balls for the first wicket, to give West Indies a rollicking start to their run chase.

Taylor hit just three fours in an innings that required 80 balls, opting to play the sheet anchor role, while Nero’s innings was a delightful cameo off 42 balls with seven fours.

For the right-handed Taylor, the knock was her third successive score above fifty after scoring 147 against the Netherlands on Wednesday and 72 against Ireland on Thursday.

When Nero departed, stumped off the off-spinner Shashikala Siriwardene in the 13th over, Aguilleira added an unbroken 75 for the second wicket with Taylor, to seal victory for the Caribbean side.

Earlier, Sri Lanka had a terrible start when they lost Hiruka Fernando to the second ball of the innings, run out without scoring with no runs on the board.

Suwini de Alwis (26) and Sandamali Dolawatte (21) attempted to revive the innings but Mohammed accounted for both, sparking a clatter of wickets.

West Indies beat the Netherlands by 148 runs in their first match and followed up with a 165-run victory over Ireland.

The Windies face unbeaten hosts South Africa today in their toughest encounter of the tournament.
