De Souza’s ton shines amidst rainy draws

All three matches of the Georgetown Cricket Association’s Heroes Cup first division two day tournament ended in draws yesterday with rain affecting two of the encounters.

In Queenstown,  the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) played to a draw with DCC making 240 and 218-8 while Malteenoes scored 167 in their first innings and  were 44-1 in their second.

At the Guyana Defence Force ground the homesters and Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) also played to a draw. Scores in the match GDF 118 all out and 85-2. GCC 200 all out.

And, at Camp Road, Everest Cricket  Club and GNIC played to a draw. Scores in the match ECC 102 and 199-9; GNIC214.
Play yesterday was highlighted by a century from GNIC’s Shawn de Souza, an eight wicket haul from left-arm orthodox spinner Totaram Bishun and a seven wicket haul from opening batsman Shemroy Barrington.
At DCC, MSC, resuming on their overnight score of 115-5 were dismissed for 167.
Deon Ferrier was the top scorer with an innings of 61 which included seven fours and three sixes. Bishun, who had taken five wickets on Saturday’s opening day, snared three more scalps to end with 8-82.

Batting a second time DCC scored 218-8 after openers Trevon Griffith and Leroy Primo put on 117 for the first wicket.
Griffith’s 63 included seven fours and two sixes while Primo struck seven fours in his innings of 50.
Jamaal Hinckson chipped in with a breezy 42 which included four fours and two sixes.

Totaram Bishun

Ferrier, 3-35 and Damien Vantull 3-40, were the principal wicket takers while Kellon Carmichael chipped in with 2-65.
Chasing 292 for victory Malteenoes were 44 for the loss of Steven Jacobs’ wicket when rain ended play for the day.
Carmichael was unbeaten on 30 and Kwame Cross unbeaten on 11.
Christopher Barnwell had 1-7.

At Camp Road, GNIC, resuming on 151-5 replying to ECC 102 all out were dismissed for 214 with De Souza’s hitting 13 fours and one six in the top score of 136.

Leon Scott, 4-47, Amir Khan 2-43 and Troy Gonsalves 2-64 were the wicket takers.
ECC in their second innings were 199-9 with Gonsalves blasting 69 which included four fours and one six. Opener Ryan Ramdass chipped in with 48 which included two fours and two sixes.

Ryan Hercules 2-11, Collis Butts, 2-26, Elton Baker 2-46 and Ranole Bourne 2-51 were the wicket takers.
And, at Camp Ayanganna, GCC resuming on their overnight score of 157-8 in reply to GDF’s 11a all out were dismissed for 200 with Joshua Wade scoring 26 and Gavin Singh 25.

Barrington, better known for his exploits with the bat, grabbed career-best figures of 7-19 from only 9.1 overs.
Batting a second time Barrington completed a fine all round effort by blasting an unbeaten 64  with five fours and three sixes as GDF erased the deficit of 82 runs by reaching 85-2 when rain ended the day’s play.

Travis Blyden made 20 in an opening stand of 78 with Barrington as Singh captured two wickets for 10 runs.
The competition will continue of Saturday.
