Twenty seconds was all the time Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy needed to ‘out the lights’ of Patrick Boston
In his debut fight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Friday evening.
A savage right hand to the temple, which was set up by a two-punch combination, ensured that Boston stayed down for close to three minutes on the canvas while medical personnel and his corner-men intervened to revive the boxer.
After he was revived he sprang to his feet and then exhibited great sportsmanship when he hugged the winner.
When the bell tolled for the first time Hardy, who was scheduled to make his debut since September but doctors then had diagnosed his opponent medically unfit, was the more active and technically sound boxer while Boston showed no inclination to fight.
Another punctuated bout was the main supporting bout where Anthony Augustine was floored one minute, 20 seconds of the first frame by Barbadian Sean Cox. Initially, both boxers engaged in the feeling out process with Cox landing the more effective jabs.
Augustine’s porous defence and slothful movements resulted in Cox, who seemed more conditioned for the bout, landing a solid left hand to the kitchen of Augustine in the middle of the ring before doubling up with powerful straight right hands to the head which fell the local boxer.
While receiving the mandatory eight-count Augustine’s legs were unable to withstand his weight and referee Eion Jardine waved the fight to a halt.
In the feature bout of the night Mandessa Moses continued her winning streak when she scored a majority decision win over Trinidadian Leeann Boodram. Boodram, who had promised to beat Moses on Thursday, won the first round but was outboxed, outhustled and later outpointed by Moses.
Moses, who was originally scheduled to fight Wendy Allen who defeated her in her first professional bout, connected with a higher percentage of power shots after a slow first round.
Moses capitalised on the tiring Boodram, who seemed way out of her league against the more experienced and skillful Moses.
In the fourth round Moses landed at will and Boodram had no response and was completely picked apart.
Clive Atwell also fought his way to a unanimous victory over Cecil Smith while FNF’s star Mark Austin produced another impressive performance over Barbados’ Revlon Lake. Austin found himself having to adjust to the lively pace of Lake. However, he withstood the incessant attacks from Lake with his counter punching skill and smooth movement before the final bell tolled.
In the amateur segment Republican Gym’s Nandkumar Singh suffered another defeat, this time at the hands of Stephon Gouveia. While both these fighter were beaten by Clevon Rock, Singh’s glaring technical deficiencies were evident again and Gouveia took advantage.
Gouveia took an early lead largely due to his better placed shots while Singh was constantly off balanced as he often lunged forward to land his punches.
Meanwhile, Travis Fraser, Ryan Jeffers and Samuel Primo scored wins over Stephon Joseph, Marlon Daryl, and Brian Bailey respectively. The referee stopped the final contest between Primo and Bailey in the first round after Bailey received a cut to the side of his right eye from a punch.
