Lewis is 18 years and under champ

Gavin Lewis gained his first boys’ singles 18 years  and under champion title as the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association Pegasus Open continued on Sunday.

Lewis defeated Daniel Lopes in straight games 7 – 5, 6 – 1 at hotel’s courts.
Speaking with Stabroek Sports after his win, the junior boys’ number one seed said that he was particularly happy with his win since it helps to offset the disappointment he felt over his loss in the Nigel’s Junior Tournament. “I feel pretty good, because after not winning the Nigel’s Tournament it felt like a really good comeback to help me forget about the previous tournament,” Lewis told this newspaper.

He had been eliminated from that tournament after losing to Saevion David-Longe in the semi-finals.

In the boys 14 years and under category, Khalif Gobin defeated Benedict Sukra 4 – 6, 6 – 3, 7 – 3.

Meanwhile in Saturday’s matches, Phillip Squires and Godfrey Lowden won 7 – 5, 6 – 4 in their men’s doubles match against Sandeep Chand and Andre Lopes.

Andy Gouviea and Ezra Sue–Ho then scored a 7 – 5, 5 – 7, 7 – 5 win against Jeremy Miller and Jason Andrews.

Leyland Leacock defeated Seanden David-Longe 6 – 1, 7 – 5 in a men’s singles match and, in the men’s 35 years and under category, Don Singh and Gilbert Barckoy won against Steve David-Longe and Mario Niamatali, respectively.

Singh outclassed David-Longe 6 – 1, 6 – 0 while Barckoy defeated Niamatali 6 – 2, 6 – 4.
In a men’s 45 doubles match, Victor Da Silva and Harry Panday defeated DL Mendis and Sukae Yamada 6 – 1, 7 – 5.
