Rain washes out second day of play between Berbice and Essequibo

Rain washed out the second day of play between Berbice and Essequibo yesterday at the Blairmont Community Centre ground and the second match between Demerara and the Rest Team was called off at Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground because of an inundated field. Demerara, who were leading the points standings of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Senior Four-Day tournament with 12 points, now move to 16 while the Rest Team now have seven points after gaining three points from their drawn encounter in their first round match against Berbice.

Meanwhile, five-time defending champion Berbice, after the first day on Thursday, had restricted the team from the Cinderella County to 127 runs from 50.3 overs as Berbice and West Indies A leg spinner Devendra Bishoo ripped through the Essequibians with 5-34 from his 19 overs. The defending champions in reply to Essequibo’s score were 96-2 from 23 overs when stumps were raised on Thursday. Maxie de Young and Narsingh Deonarine are the not out batsmen on 42 and 17. Pacer Ronsford Beaton (1-18) and Rayon Thomas (1-28) were the successful bowlers, who accounted for the wickets of Sewnarine Chattergoon (23) and Richard Ramdeen (5) respectively.

Kenzo Baksh (28), Jason Heyliger (28) and Norman Fredericks (24) were the batsmen who made runs for Essequibo while Bishoo received support from West Indies under-19 fast bowler Keon Joseph, medium pacer Esaun Crandon and off spinner Narsingh Deonarine who returned figures of 2-33 (15), 2-54 (15) and 1-3 (1.3) respectively.
