Defending Guyana Open champion Persaud in the lead

Defending champion Avinash Persaud recorded the best overall gross while his younger sibling Avinda Kishore shot the best net on a rain-affected opening day of the R1 Vodka sponsored Guyana Open Golf championships at Lusignan Golf Course. The 72 golfers defied a rain storm and a soggy course to finish all 18 holes in the day in tough conditions.

Persaud  (2 handicap) playing in the 0-9 handicap flight shot a gross 73  and net 71 but it was young Kishore who left the field stunned with a net 68 from a gross 75 playing off a 7 handicap.

Sookram Deosarran (7 handicap gross 76)   had the second best net of 69 score in the 0-9 flight.
Other players in striking distance are former champions Alfred Mentore (8-78-70), Mike Mangal (7-77-70) and Imran Khan (5-76-71).

Colin Ming playing off a 14 handicap shot a net 68 from a gross 82 to lead in the 10-18 flight with Chatterpaul Deo 15 handicap hot on his heels with net 69 from a gross 84.

The leader in the 19-28 flight was George Brahim (24 handicap gross 91) with the best net of the day of 67.

In the ladies category, Christine Sukhram (10-88-78) recorded the best gross, while Joaan Deo (21-96-75) shot the best net.

Banks DIH Limited Sales and Marketing Executive Carlton Joao tees off this year’s Guyana Open tournament at the Lusignan Golf Course yesterday.

The official tee off was done by Banks DIH Sales and Marketing Executive Carlton Joao.

The players representing the United States, Canada, Suriname and host Guyana will be looking for favorable weather today although weather forecast predict more showers.

The tournament, which ends today, is sponsored by local beverage giants Banks DIH under the R1 Vodka brand.
