Guyanese lone newcomer in strong Windies squad for India

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Guyanese all-rounder June Ogle-Thomas is the only newcomer in a 14-member West Indies women’s squad named for next January’s tour of India.

She replaces Cordel Jack in the only change to the squad which contested October’s ICC Women’s Challenge in South Africa, and has been chosen based on her performances in the West Indies Cricket Board’s Women’s 50 Over League, a WICB release said yesterday.

The Windies will play five One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals between January 10-24.

“It will be a challenging tour but we are confident we can do well against the Indian girls on their home soil,” said captain Merissa Aguilleira.
“It will be the first time in India for many of us but we believe we can rise above the challenge. We want to continue from where we left off in South Africa where we played so very well.”

She added: “The Indians are ranked above us in the ICC rankings but we believe we can do well against them and move up. We need to show improvement from the tour in South Africa.

“Our experienced players will be the ones to lead from the front, but in South Africa everyone made a contribution at some stage so we know we have a team with depth and strength.”

The side includes the in-form duo of Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin, who were two of the standout performers in South Africa recently.
West Indies will open the Indian tour with a warm-up match against an Indian Cricket Board President’s XI on January 8 before playing the first ODI in Mumbai two days later.
