Manzoor century fires Pakistan but Windies A hits back

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Opener Khurram Manzoor stroked a fine century as Pakistan A kept West Indies A in the field for the entire opening day of the second four-day “Test” at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex yesterday.

The 24-year-old right-hander, who played the last of his seven Tests as recent as January this year, gathered 104 to propel the tourists to 238 for seven after they won the toss and batted first.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul was the leading bowler with three for 56 while leg-spinner Odean Brown captured two for 54.

Pakistan were handed a fine start when Manzoor helped post 68 for the first wicket with Umair Khan who cracked 41 from 103 balls with six fours.

When Umair fell just before lunch, lbw to Brown, Manzoor combined with Shan Masood in the most productive stand of the innings, 111 for the second wicket.

Manzoor struck 16 fours in an innings that required 209 balls and spanned 289 minutes while Masood hit eight fours in 44 off 119 balls.

When Masood gave a catch to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin off medium pacer David Bernard at 179 for two, Pakistan A’s innings collapsed as they lost the next six wickets for 55 runs to lose momentum.

Only Safraz Ahmed with 22 from 44 balls showed any resistance thereafter as Permaul made crucial breakthroughs.
