Persaud takes home lion’s share of prizes at GNRA presentation

Persaud, who emerged champion of the National Senior championships held in  November, copped several individual prizes including the Queensway Trophy, the Valladares,Troph,Leslie Dowridge  Memorial, Lushington, Wood Davis, Denise  Carryl and Sigmund Douglas Grand Aggregate trophies.

Prize winners at the Guyana National Rifle Association awards ceremony on Wednesday.

Smallbore shooter Dale Hing who won the recently held Spads Inc. yearend shoot was also rewarded.

Other prize winners included Ransford Goodluck, Peter Persaud, Dr. Johann DaSilva, David Dharry, Ryan Mc Kinnon, Gordon Richards and Murtland Smith.

Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony lauded the association for its achievements during 2010 which included retaining the West Indies Fullbore championship in Barbados and finishing fifth place in the Pairs competition at the Commonwealth Games in India.

Minister Anthony said that the possibility exist for a shooting gallery to be established in close proximity to Georgetown but cited safety concerns. GNRA President Commodore Gary Best said that 2010 was another extremely good year for the sport locally.

He made another appeal to the government for a plot of land close to the city to establish a clubhouse.

According to Best, a plot of land was made available to the association at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo but it is not an ideal location.

GNRA Vice President ACP retired Paul Slowe, who managed the team to the Commonwealth Games traced back Guyana’s performance this year and highlighted the achievements.

Also present at the function were Governor of the Bank of Guyana Lawrence Williams, former GNRA president,  Major General Ret’d. Michael Atherley, Life Member Neville Denny and representatives of sponsors.
