GABA bounces off Division Two and Three tournaments Saturday

The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) will bounce off two more competitions on their events calendar for 2010 when they stage a Division Two and Division Three knockout tournament under lights from Saturday at the Burnham basketball court.
The Division Two competition, which is the first of its kind to be contested in Georgetown within the past three years, will be staged under GABA’s banner as ‘GABA’s Second Division Knockout Tournament’ and will be contested concurrently with the Division Three competition, titled the ‘Kevin Worrell Third Division Knockout Tournament’, in memory of the late Courts Pacesetters basketball player, Kevin Worrell.

Trevor Rose

This is according to GABA’s president, Trevor Rose when contacted by Stabroek Sport yesterday. Rose explained that this is the first Second Division tournament to be contested since he was appointed as the president of GABA. “Since I became president none [Division Two tournament] was played, but the second division tournament is compulsory in the basketball community,” Rose stated.

The GABA boss added that reinstituting the tournament “gives third division players who are skillful enough an opportunity to showcase their talent at a higher level,” since according to the rules of the Division Two competition, all senior national players are excluded from participating in the tournament.

According to Rose, following a GABA executive meeting Tuesday evening it was recognized that the fixtures for the upcoming competitions have to be amended, since one local club was not included, but the amendments are currently being made and the stage will be set for the tournaments to jump-off from Saturday. However, Rose disclosed that the competitions will begin with the Division Three tournament on Saturday from 6pm.

The Division Three competition will continue on Wednesdays and following Saturdays, while the Division Two tournament will be contested on Sundays and Thursdays, until the finals of both competitions.
