Hector, George star on opening day

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Middle order batsman Donwell Hector stroked a century to lead a strong Vincentian batting effort while left-arm spinner Denis George snatched a six-wicket haul for Grenada, on the opening day of the second series of matches in the Windward Islands Senior Championship on Tuesday.

Hector, a 22-year-old right-hander with 17 first class matches already behind him, carved out a wonderful 150 to lead St Vincent and the Grenadines to 291 for nine at Progress Park. He struck 16 fours and five sixes to record the second century of the two-week tournament, following a double century in the opening round by Grenada and West Indies player Andre Fletcher.

It was a dominating inning by Hector, with the next best scorer being Salvon Browne who made 40. The pick of the St Lucian bowlers was left-arm medium pacer Jonathan Joseph who took five for 48.

In the other game, George bagged six for 73 as 13 wickets tumbled on the opening day of the clash between Grenada and Dominica. George, now the leading Grenadian spinner in the absence of the retired Rawl Lewis, ensured that Dominica were bowled out for 198 after the visitors won the toss and batted.

By the close, however, the hosts were struggling on 27 for three. On an easy pitch, at least four Dominican batsmen got starts without going on, with Kevin James hitting the top score of 40.

Captain Mervyn Mathew hit 38 while Samuel Mitchell and Oscar George got 30 apiece. The three-day tournament will be used to select the Windward Islands squad for next year’s first class tournament.
