Fletcher half-century fails to stop Dominica push

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – A defiant half-century from West Indies batsman Andre Fletcher was not enough to revive Grenada as Dominica seized control on the second day of their second round Windward Islands Senior Championship match on Wednesday.

The right-handed Fletcher stroked his way to a patient top score of 65 as Grenada, resuming from their overnight 27 for three, crumbled to 94 all out in their first innings in response to Dominica’s 198 at the National Stadium. At the close, Dominica were 179 for nine with Kevin James unbeaten on a fine 86.

Fletcher, who amassed a double century in his first game against St. Vincent and the Grenadines in Carriacou last week, struck three fours and two sixes and was the only batsman to get into double figures.

Spinner Vivian Titre made significant inroads into the Grenadian batting to finish with five for 28 while Raymond Casimir claimed three for 28 and Vincent Lewis, two for 14. The visitors are currently leading by 283 runs and appear to be pushing for an outright victory.

At Progress Park, SVG were also chasing full points against St Lucia, after piling up a lead of 167 runs at the end of the second day. A fighting last wicket stand between Lyndon James and Kenrick Williams carried the Vincentians from their overnight 281 for nine to 336 all out.

James scored the majority of the runs in the partnership, smashing eight fours and three sixes in a knock of 79 while Williams contributed just two. Middle order batsmen Donwell Hector was the main contributor with a well played 150 on the first day.

Jonathan Joseph finished with six for 52 while Dalton Polius (2-94) and Alex Antoine (2-96) snatched two wickets apiece. St. Lucia were then restricted to 193 in their first innings despite enterprising half centuries from Denis Louis and Johnson Charles.

Louis cracked eight fours in a top score of 55 while Charles hit 51 which included a six, but were both unable to go on as left arm fast medium bowler Kenroy Peters tore through the batting order to finish with five for 27. Aston Bobb picked up two for 33 and SVG were 24 for one in their second innings.
