Sonia Noel hosts “Style Mission’ for third consecutive year

For the third consecutive year, designer Sonia Noel is hosting her annual charity show, but this year she says the mission is bigger than her project.

Sonia’s ‘Style Mission’ is set for tomorrow at a private residence at Ogle, East Coast Demerara and is in aid of the David Rose School for the Handicapped.

In an interview with The Scene earlier this week Sonia hesitated to say the word, ‘handicapped’, noting that she believes in the phrase, ‘differently-abled’. However, she said the school has had the name for years now.

Sonia disclosed that while she was mulling over which charity to support this year and “coming up with no ideas”, she opened an email from the David Rose School which she said touched her heart. Officials at the school wrote her requesting help to raise funds for a computer laboratory.

“I read that email and knew instantly that I had to help, and it sunk in more after I paid a visit to the school…they are in need of my help and the help of others, this project is bigger than my show”, Sonia said.

She explained that her annual charity shows, which are often well supported, would raise a fair amount of funds. How-ever, she said that to equip a school with sufficient computers would be a bigger undertaking than the “few thousands that we raise”.

But she remains hopeful. Sonia said that several designers have already agreed to be part of the show while a few persons have committed to participating.

She is planning an evening of fashion and music, noting that she has managed to get people to sing at the show and one of them is an employee of the US embassy.

“I am blown away at how quickly people said yes, but we all know why we want to be part of this project…more people to come on board and let us give those children one of the happiest Christmases they have had”, Sonia added.

Sonia also has a Dutch auction planned for the show, which she said is always exciting.

Tickets for the show are on sale at Silhouettes, Barr Street, Kitty; the event gets underway at 5 pm tomorrow.
