Suspect in fish vendor murder turns himself in

The fish cleaner who allegedly stabbed his colleague, Marlon Greene, to death earlier this week turned himself in to police yesterday morning.
Investigators escorted the suspect, along with his attorney, to the Meadowbank area where they questioned several persons. The accused has since been taken into custody.

Michelle Vieira, cousin of the deceased, told Stabroek News yesterday afternoon that investigators informed relatives that the accused turned himself in. The woman further said that she was there when the suspect and his attorney, in the company of police, visited the area where the incident occurred.

Police, according to Vieira, informed relatives that the suspect will be charged with murder and will appear in court this morning. “They told us we can go to court for 9 tomorrow morning (today),” she said.

The woman further said that a post-mortem examination was conducted on Greene yesterday morning. He died from shock and hemorrhaging due to a stab wound to the neck. The wound, Vieira said she had been told by the pathologist, ruptured a main artery in her cousin’s neck.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, speaking briefly with Stabroek News via telephone, confirmed that the suspect had turned himself in to police yesterday afternoon. He added that investigations were ongoing.

In a press release issued a day after the incident, police said that Greene, 23, a labourer of Meadowbank Squatting Area, Georgetown, was murdered at about 9am on Monday at the Meadowbank Wharf.

Investigations, police had reported, revealed that Greene and another man had an argument during which he was stabbed to his neck. Greene was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted and later died.
