Drill instructor charged with rape of recruit

Police drill instructor Dexter Clementson who is accused of raping a 19-year-old recruit was placed on bail in the sum of $300,000 after making his appearance before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates Court yesterday.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday last at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.

Clementson, a sergeant of police, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of rape.

He makes his next court appearance on April 6.

Clementson reportedly raped the teen some time after 9 pm last Thursday.

The recruit told the newspaper that he was given guard duty by the instructor who assigned him to a certain location in the Felix Austin Training School at Eve Leary.

The teenager said that when he arrived at the location it was dark and he was returning to inform his instructor about this when he was attacked by him, [Clementson].

The recruit explained to Stabroek News that before he could move away from the location, his instructor walked up to him and launched the attack.

“He lock me off in vice and then hit me… I lost consciousness for a while and when I came to the first thing I did was rush to my superiors to report what had happened,” the young man recounted.
