Imam accused of assaulting Masjid worker

An Imam accused of assaulting and using abusive language towards an employee of the Kitty Masjid was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $20,000 bail, after he was charged before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Sajid Khan is that on December 30, at the Kitty Masjid, he unlawfully assaulted Khairoon Khan. On the same day also, Sajid Khan is also accused of making use of abusive language towards Khairoon Khan, thus resulting in a breach of the peace.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the facts were as charged.

The magistrate subsequently placed the accused on bail in the sum of $10,000 for each charge and the case was transferred to return to Court Two for a hearing on January 14.
