New Year’s chopping accused on attempted murder charge

Rudolph London, the man accused of severely chopping his common-law wife who is now clinging to life in the hospital, was arraigned on an attempted murder charge at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magis-trates’ Court yesterday.

London, 39, of 109 Best Village, West Coast Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of attempted murder and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin.

It is alleged that on January 1, New Year’s Day, at Best Village, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Shaunell Warrick with intent to murder her. Reports reaching this newspaper are that on New Year’s Day, Warrick was severely beaten by London. Warrick, 39, of 3471 Stevedore Housing Scheme, sustained head injuries as a result of a beating with a cutlass.

Warrick, a mother of two and a teacher at the East Street Nursery School, was attacked at the man’s home at Best Village. The woman has a fractured skull and doctors have told her family that she has a “50/50” chance of survival. She is currently hospitalised in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

This newspaper had learnt that London was taken into the Ruimveldt Police Station by a cousin of the woman on Tuesday and was later transferred to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station.The court was told yesterday that Warrick remains hospitalised.

London’s mother told the court that her son is receiving psychiatric treatment.

He is to return to court on February 28.
