Man believed to be explosion victim found alive

Gordon Baird, the man who a relative had identified as the victim of the market explosion on Wednesday is alive and well. It means that the man killed in the explosion outside of the Stabroek Market remains unidentified.

Following a Stabroek News article in which businessman Ted Sabat told this newspaper that he suspected the dead man to be Baird, relatives decided to contact the police. Investigators escorted Baird’s cousin, Wayne James, to the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour this morning.

James identified the dead man as Baird shortly after 12 pm but was clearly mistaken.

When questioned about the deceased after his visit to the morgue, James declined to comment.

“The police tell me not to talk with nobody about this thing so I ain’t going to be able to tell you anything…most of our relatives live overseas,” was all James was prepared to say.

Stabroek News was later able to find Baird alive and well at the Night Shelter. His cousin, James, also subsequently identified him. The cousin told Stabroek News that the body at the morgue has a scar just like one that Baird has and that was how he came to the conclusion that it was Baird.
