Police investigators said this afternoon they were finally able to identify the man who died in last Wednesday’s explosion at the Stabroek Market area as Hilton Lazarus.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud confirmed that relatives visited the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour this morning and identified the dead man.

Persaud said that police have no information on him at the moment.

This newspaper understands that Lazarus, 44, who had no fixed placed of abode, was identified by his mother Desiree Bacchus. However, when Stabroek News visited the woman’s Sophia home relatives there declined to comment.

Over the last few days police had made several failed attempts to identify the dead man. Shortly after 10.30am last Wednesday, a grenade exploded at the Stabroek Market area killing Lazarus and injuring 18 other people. Police believe that Lazarus was holding the explosive device in his hand.
