Pump attendant Jenny Davis, 20, was yesterday charged with stealing $2.3 million from the Lethem Gas Station.
Davis, one of two women from Rupununi jointly charged with the crime, pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Nadia Martin, who is jointly charged with Davis, was not present at court and Prosecutor Lionel Harvey said she was injured during a confrontation which arose out of the alleged larceny. Martin was taken to the hospital and she was advised by doctors not to travel. Harvey added that the woman has since been discharged from the hospital and is being kept at the Lethem Police Station.
According to charge, between December 1, 2010 and January 10, 2011, at Tabatinga Rupununi, being employed as a clerk or servant of the Lam’s Gas Station, Davis stole the sum of $2.3 million out of the possession or power of her employer. Davis, a mother of two, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of larceny by clerk or servant.
Harvey said that Davis was responsible for selling fuel and recording the sales into a records book. However, he said that Davis and Martin, who was a supervisor at the gas station, failed in their duty to record the sales and instead stole the money.
He added that investigations later led to the arrest and charge of the women after a police report was made by their employer.
Harvey had no objection to bail but requested that it be set in a substantial sum to ensure that Davis returns to stand trial. He also requested that the woman be ordered to report to the Lethem Police Station while on bail.
His requests were granted. After she was granted bail, Davis was ordered to report to the Lethem Police Station every Monday and Friday. The case was transferred to the Lethem Magistrates’ Court for March 7.
