Man jailed for snatching cell phone and fleeing from custody

A man who admitted to stealing a woman’s cell phone and escaping from lawful custody was yesterday sentenced to one year and  then eighteen months to be served concurrently  when he made his appearance before Magistrate Geeta Chandan Persid-Edmond.

Imran Khan pleaded guilty to the charge of larceny from the person which stated that on October 20, 2010 he stole from the person of Hemwattie Sookram one Motorola cell phone valued $15,000.

Khan also admitted to the court that on October 21, 2010 while being in lawful custody of the Bourda Outpost lock-ups, he escaped from Sergeant 848 Bristol.

In giving the facts of the case, City Corporal James Garnett told the court that on October 20 at about 17:40 hrs, Sookram was walking on Croal Street when she was accosted from behind by the defendant who snatched her cell phone from her hands while she was speaking on it.

Garnett then told the court that after snatching the woman’s phone, Khan made good his escape.

The woman however raised an alarm and subsequently the defendant was captured by City Police 1446 Arthur who was in the vicinity on foot patrol.

Garnett said that the article was recovered on Khan’s person.
Khan was later arrested and taken to the Bourda Outpost lock-ups where he was charged.

While at the lock-ups, the City Corporal related to the court that the defendant on October 21 requested to use the toilet and was granted permission by Bristol. Garnett said that Khan however went into the toilet and removed a piece of mesh and a couple of window panes and made good his escape.

The corporal said that the defendant had been on the run every since and was only apprehended on Tuesday by City Police 1693 John who was aware that the man was wanted for the offences since he was an investigating rank in the incidents.

Moments before being sentenced, when asked by the magistrate if he wished to say anything, Khan said, “I am sorry for what I have done.”
The defendant was then handed down a two-year prison sentence for escaping and 18 months for the larceny charge.

Magistrate Persid-Edmond, however, ordered that they run concurrently.
