Man granted bail over ganja charge

- woman accused of having cocaine remanded

A mason was yesterday placed on $50,000 bail and a woman remanded to prison when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One charged with possession of and trafficking in narcotics respectively.

It is alleged that on January 21, at Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara, Teon Williams was found with 6 grammes of cannabis. Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, before whom the matter was called, asked the defendant how he pleaded, and he said, “not guilty”.

According to the facts as presented by Special Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Oswald Massiah, on the day in question police carried out a search patrol at Lot 12 Grove Public Road East Bank Demerara, where they saw the defendant push an object into in his pants pocket. He was searched and arrested after the illegal substance was allegedly found on him.

Massiah objected to bail, stating that the defendant apparently has no fixed place of abode. Massiah said he had told CANU officials that he lived in Sophia, then he told the court that he was from 20 Triumph Housing Scheme, and he was arrested at Grove.

However, the prosecutor’s objection to bail was overruled and the defendant was placed on $50,000 bail.
Meanwhile, it is alleged that on the same day, at the same residence Sandra Williams had in her possession 13 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The defendant was represented by attorney at law Vic Pooran who asked that a fingerprinting analysis be done. The attorney stated that his client was also severely beaten by CANU officials; who “severely hunched” her, and she was experiencing pain to her head and abdomen. As a result Pooran asked that the defendant be medically examined.

The attorney also asked for an early date for the start of trial.
The magistrate transferred both cases to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for trial on January 31. Sandra Williams was remanded to prison.
