Couple fined for assaulting each other

A man and the mother of his children yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with assaulting each other.

It is alleged that Cleveland Williams unlawfully assaulted Jennifer Boodie, with whom he has four children, and she in return, assaulted him so as to cause him actual body harm.

The prosecution told the court that on the day in question the two had an argument and then assaulted each other with a cutlass and iron. The prosecution stated that Williams dealt Boodie a cuff and attempted to chop her with the cutlass but instead lashed her with the weapon. The woman then hit him to the forehead with an iron.

Boodie told the court that she had to be hospitalized for abdominal pains.

Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry subsequently fined Williams $15,000 and Boodie $25,000 or they both have the choice of two weeks’ imprisonment.
