Gunmen snatch $700,000 from Popeye’s

Gun-toting bandits robbed the Popeye’s outlet at Vlissengen Road last night carting away $700,000 in cash plus valuables and leaving staff and customers traumatized.

The bandits walked into the fast-food outlet at about 8:50 pm, staff told Stabroek News. Both wore masks and were armed with handguns. About five customers including an overseas-based Guyanese were in the restaurant at the time and they were held at gun-point. One of the bandits relieved the customers of their valuables while the other focused on the cashier and grabbed $700,000.

After grabbing their booty, the bandits fled on foot. This newspaper was told that the building was protected by security cameras but these were reportedly not working at the time. The attack left the customers and staff traumatized. A report was made to the police and investigations are ongoing.
