Two held in Sparta ‘channa’ bombing

Essequibo police have arrested two suspects who are assisting with investigations in connection with the hurling of a channa bomb at the Mohanroops’ family home, at Bamboo Dam, Sparta, Essequibo Coast, early Tuesday morning.

According to Commander of ‘G’ Division Brian Joseph, the two men who are from neighbouring villages were arrested later on the day the act was committed.

The incident left Sunita, a mother of one, with severe burns about her body. She is recovering at the Suddie Public Hospital, where she was taken for medical treatment.

Speaking with this newspaper at his home on Wednesday morning, Naresh Mohanroop said he was awakened by shouts from his son Danesh and Danesh’s fiancée Sunita, who were occupying the bottom flat of the two-storey house, at around 1 am on Tuesday.

He said he rushed downstairs to investigate and was greeted with flames coming from the bottom flat which his son, Sunita and their four-month-old daughter occupied. “…Meh see meh son girl in flames and we throw water on she to out the fire. By that time she deh already burn bad. Me son run out with me granddaughter cover up in blanket. Is da save she from getting burn,” he said. Sunita was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital.

According to Mohanroop, who is a rice farmer and fisherman, he quickly alerted his neighbours who responded quickly with buckets. “We nah hesitate, we get we bucket and start throw water to out the fire. But the fire was spreading to other parts of the house because of the gasoline.”

With the assistance from the neighbours they were able to put the fire out.
Everything the family owned was destroyed in the fire.

Meanwhile, Danesh told Stabroek News that he, his fiancée and their baby girl were asleep at their home when they were awakened by a flash of light in their bedroom.

Danesh said it appeared as though four bottles, which appeared to be channa bombs had been hurled through their bedroom window. The man said the flammable liquid from one of the bottles landed on the mother of his child and then the flames ignited on her.
Danesh sustained minor burns to his right leg and foot. He said he had no idea who could have carried out such an act.
