Bail set at $250,000 in Dec 26 wounding charge

A 21-year-old man yesterday pleaded not guilty to a charge of unlawful and malicious wounding when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was put on bail of $250,000.

It is alleged that on December 26, 2010, David King unlawfully and maliciously wounded John Beharry so as to cause him actual bodily harm.

In presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor told the court that the virtual complainant and the defendant are known to each other. On the day in question, Beharry left the Main Street Big Lime and headed for the car park where he met King and the two became involved in an argument. The defendant then dealt the VC a cuff to his left eye and  stabbed him to his shoulder. A report was made but police were unable to apprehend King. The accused was only arrested last week by a private investigator.

Attorney-at-law Mohamed Zafar told the court that the VC along with another person attacked his client and the injuries were inflicted in an effort to defend himself. He asked that his client be granted reasonable bail.

Roxanne Beharry, mother of the VC, appeared on behalf of her son and said that King continues to threaten her son. She said that King who was released on bail on January 29 was in front of her home on the said night with a gun.

However, the prosecution had no objection to bail but  asked for it to be of a substantial amount.

Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry granted King bail in the sum of $250,000 and transferred the matter to Court Two for report and fixture on February 7.
