Sara Johanna man killed in bus accident

A 20-year-old Sara Johanna man died after a speeding minibus slammed into a light pole just around a turn at the Pearl Public Road, East Bank Demerara today.

Dead is Vishan Seeram of Lot 5 Sara Johanna, East Bank Demerara. The incident occurred shortly after midnight a short distance away from Seeram’s house at the border of the villages.

Steve Persaud, who lives two houses away from the deceased, sustained injuries to the back and has since been treated and released from hospital. The driver of the minibus, the deceased and Persaud were the only persons in the speeding minibus.

The driver, relatives told Stabroek News, had been racing another minibus. The two buses were returning home from a wedding at Timehri. Seeram had been sitting in the front passenger seat of the vehicle.

As the driver took the turn at Pearl, relatives said they had learnt from Persaud, he lost control of the vehicle, slammed into the light pole and toppled into a trench. Seeram, according to them, died before he could be pulled from the trench.

The driver is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
