Brazilian brothers remanded over ganja trafficking in Rupununi

Two Brazilian brothers accused by the police of having a quantity of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking were yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against 18-year-old Raimundo Alresmer Da Silva is that on January 22 at Moco Moco Village, Central Rupununi he had in his possession 149 grammes of cannabis.

On the same day at Moco Moco also, Roberto Da Silva, 19, is alleged to have had 83 grammes of cannabis in his possession.

The young men through an interpreter denied the charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when they were read to them by the acting chief magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

In giving the facts of the case, prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, the police were on patrol when they saw the defendants acting in a suspicious manner.

A search was subsequently conducted on their person which, according to Telford, led to the discovery of the illegal items.

According to the prosecutor, Raimundo Alresmer had the cannabis in a bottle which was found in a haversack he was carrying.

Meanwhile, Telford said that Roberto had 83 grammes of cannabis in a bag he was carrying.

The court then heard that the men along with the illegal substances were taken to the Lethem Police Station where the items were weighed. They were later arrested and charged with the offences.

After hearing the case, the unrepresented defendants were remanded to prison. Their matters were transferred to the Lethem Magistrates’ Court for March 8.
