Man jailed for assaulting reputed wife

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday handed down a three-month sentence to a man for assaulting his reputed wife.

On February 2 Sewnarine Jagdat of Lot 3 ‘G’ Middleton Street unlawfully assaulted Leelawattie Ghanshan. The 42-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
According to the facts as presented by prosecutor Stephen Telford, the defendant and the virtual complainant (VC) share a common-law relationship in which the accused is usually abusive.

Telford told the court that on the day in question the defendant went home under the influence of alcohol and asked the VC for his meal, which she gave to him. The defendant then refused to accept the meal and proceeded to verbally abuse the VC, who walked away. The defendant then became angry and dealt the VC several cuffs to the abdomen. The matter was reported and the defendant was arrested.

When asked by the magistrate whether she would like to proceed with the matter, the VC said that, “he often doing it steady and I said I can’t take it no more.”

The accused was then given the three-month jail sentence.
