Manhunt in St Kitts for escaped Guyanese prisoner

Members of the security forces in St. Kitts and Nevis have launched a massive manhunt for a Guyanese prisoner who escaped yesterday afternoon while working at the Needsmust Power Station in St. Kitts, according to SKNVibes in Basseterre.

Ranel Carmichael, who has been residing in Rawlins Village, Nevis, was among a group of prisoners working in the compound of the power station when he escaped from custody, the online report said.

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson, the incident occurred at about 2:40 p.m. when Carmichael sought permission to go to the bathroom.

Henderson told SKNVibes that Carmichael was convicted at the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court on two separate counts of larceny on October 1, 2010 and January 1, 2011 respectively, and was sentenced to serve three years on each count.

The police said “Carmichael has been living in Nevis for the past three years, prior to his incarceration, and is likely to frequent the areas where he was residing immediately after his escape. The police are therefore seeking the assistance of the general public in locating and capturing the escaped prisoner,” Inspector Henderson said.
