Man said to be UG student facing armed robbery, firearm charges

A 23-year-old man arraigned on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition  and robbery under arms was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Kurt Kendall is that on February 7 at Georgetown, being armed with a gun, he robbed Mothura Narine of one haversack, a cell phone and other items valued $18,500.

On the same day also, the defendant is accused of having in his possession one .38 revolver and two live rounds of .38 ammunition without a licence.

The young man denied the charges when they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

In giving the facts of the case, Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that on the day in question the defendant accosted the virtual complainant (VC), placed a gun to his side and demanded the items mentioned in the charge.

Fearful for his life, Pindar related that the VC complied with the order and Kendall relieved him of the items and made good his escape.

According to the corporal, an alarm was  raised by the complainant and subsequently the accused was arrested and found with the items in his possession.

Attorney Joe Harmon who entered an appearance for the accused said that his client is of exceptional character and is at present pursuing a medical  degree at the University of Guyana which keeps him meaningfully occupied.

Explaining that his client has a mental condition, the lawyer said too that Kendall is an avid churchgoer who keeps away from mischievous behaviour.

Harmon then made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he has no antecedents, poses no risk of flight, has a fixed address and has been cooperating with police investigations.

The prosecution, however, objected to the bail application made by the attorney.

After listening to the case, the prosecution’s request was granted and the magistrate informed the accused that he would be remanded to prison. He was ordered to return to court on February 15 for statements.
