Leroy DeAgrella, the husband of Nalini DeAgrella, the woman who leapt to her death off of the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) on Monday night, was released from police custody late yesterday afternoon.
The man had been discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital on Wednesday morning and was promptly taken back to the Providence Police Station on the East Bank of Demerara.
Reports are that he revisited the scene of the incident yesterday with the police to recount the events that transpired along the bridge on Monday evening. He is expected to report to the police until investigations into the woman’s death are completed.
A relative told this newspaper yesterday that the man’s condition had improved.
The man has related that he was extensively grilled by the police, whom he noted were leaving no stones unturned as they thoroughly investigated the woman’s death.
A mother of five, DeAgrella, 40, of Lot 26, Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara, was reported to have jumped off the DHB into the Demerara River shortly after 1 am. The police stated that her husband also jumped into the river, in a failed attempt to rescue her. He was rescued and subsequently admitted to hospital.
The police stated that initial investigations revealed that the woman and her husband reportedly had an argument while crossing the bridge in their motor vehicle. She requested that her husband stop the vehicle and then jumped off the bridge into the river, police said.
Police sources told Stabroek News on Tuesday that the matter was being thoroughly investigated since the man gave conflicting accounts of the events which led to the woman ending up in the river.
The woman’s body surfaced along the right bank of the river, in the vicinity of the jetty in Kingston, around 10 am that morning and a post mortem–examination was expected to be performed on her remains before the end of this week.
