Wife of murder accused remanded over taking cell phone into jail

A woman who allegedly took a cell phone into the Camp Street jail was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation is that on January 24, Marceline Small took a cell phone into the prison.

The woman pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her by the acting chief magistrate.

The prosecution’s facts are that on the day in question, the accused had gone to the prison to visit someone when she was caught by prison officials taking a cell phone into the prison.

After listening to the case, the magistrate informed the unrepresented Small that she would be remanded to prison because of the seriousness of the offence. The accused was ordered to return to court on March 1.

The defendant is the wife of Barry Small who, along with Bibi Sharima Gopaul has been charged with murdering schoolgirl Neesa Gopaul.
