The lifeless body of a 38-year-old man was yesterday morning discovered on the roadway not far from his Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara home and the police are awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine how he died.
Dead is Rishie Persaud called ‘Web’ of Lot 12 Land of Canaan. Reports are that when he was found the left side of his face was “black and blue” and there was blood oozing from his eye and mouth.
Ran Persaud told Stabroek News that he last saw his brother alive around 7 pm on Friday when he (Rishie) left saying that he was going to buy a sweet drink at a nearby shop.
Ran said that his brother passed the shop located a few doors from their home and disappeared. When he did not return home that night, Ran said, he didn’t give it much thought since Persaud would sometimes sleep over at friends.
The man recalled that around 6 am he was informed that his brother was lying dead on Esau Street located nearby and when he went to the scene, he saw him lying in the grass. He said he immediately called the police who arrived more than an hour later. The man said that his brother was an alcoholic and he is awaiting the results of an autopsy which is scheduled for tomorrow.
One resident told this newspaper that he was heading to work when he saw Persaud, who he knew well, lying in the grass. The man said he called out to him but got no answer. He said that a man who lived nearby came over to enquire what was happening and it was then that it was discovered that Persaud was dead.
Stabroek News was also told that Persaud would sometimes be found lying on the road after he would have consumed alcohol.
Residents did not recall hearing any strange sounds during the course of the night.
The resident said that Persaud who did odd jobs around the community would frequent the many liquor shops located on the street where he was found.
He said after it was realized that he was dead, his family was informed.
Residents who gathered at Persaud’s home described him as a very friendly person who was always willing to go the extra mile to help others.
