Man who said he was hungry stole biscuits, other items from school

A man was on Tuesday remanded to prison after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on charges of break and enter and larceny.

It is alleged that Sunday last at Anira Street, Queenstown, Milton Smith broke and entered New Comenius Primary School and stole six rolls of toilet paper, biscuits and other items amounting to $4,050, property of the Ministry of Education. The accused pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

“I go fuh tek biscuit cause I was hungry, and on de way out I see de things and I scramble them up,” was the defendant’s explanation. When asked by the magistrate what he did with the items, Smith replied that he sold them.

Police Corporal Venetta Pindar when prompted objected to bail on the grounds that the accused has no fixed place of abode. However, at the magistrate’s request the accused gave his address as 169 Thomas Street, Kitty.

A probation report was ordered and the accused was remanded to prison until March 11.
